![]() ![]() Sometimes frustrating, too, but in the good way.įrom its top-down viewpoint, one-hit deaths (for the player), quick restarts, and focus on fast, rhythmic melee combat, the influences of developer Team Shifty are abundantly clear, taking a few cues from the brilliant violence ’em up, Hotline Miami. Secondly, he can shift (teleport) short distances, even beyond walls, which makes his mission of stealing weaponised plutonium from this fancy labyrinth full of cronies, lasers, mines, and other dangers a whole lot… well, not easier as this is a challenging game, but certainly possible, and fun. Firstly, he can punch like a jackhammer, which is good as it’s his only real form of subduing the hundreds of gun-toting goons patrolling the tower of evil businessman, Donald Trump Chairman Stone. Shifty is a thief with two very useful abilities. These are the types of high-pressure encounters that can make Mr. ![]() The remaining three know exactly where I’ve landed and are already on their way… A couple of swift hooks knocks them to the floor, and I’m gone again, this time materialising in an adjacent office. The others go to fire, but in a cloud of black smoke I’m already gone, only to reappear behind another. It hurtles across the room, taking out the guard directly opposite in a shower of splinters. I know that there are five guards with guns trained on the other side. It's light on drama, heavy on destruction, and at its best when you don't overthink it.I pause outside the door. Shifty is the video game equivalent of a popcorn movie. And being forced to replay certain moments is tiresome. While you can restart immediately after getting killed, sometimes it can get a little frustrating to fight through a horde of enemies, only to get killed at the last minute and have to go through the whole floor again. Shifty is a literal one-hit wonder, meaning if he takes one hit, he's dead. But with so much happening on the screen, it can be a little difficult to get time to think. There's some real strategy involved, especially later in the game, when your best option is to bait the guards into shooting into each other by teleporting at the last minute. Bouncing around rooms and through walls is a fun twist on an old formula and a necessity for staying alive. Shifty lacks in substance, it more than makes up for in style. In longer doses, though, the game's repetition can start to wear. Once you can accept that, what you're left with is an arcade beat-'em-up that's insanely addictive, at least in small chunks. Instead, you just have to accept that your goal is to beat things up and not get shot. Eventually, you pick up bits and pieces of how you got there and what you're doing, but honestly, if you're expecting any sort of character-driven plot or deep narrative, you won't find it here. You're sort of just tossed right into the chaos, working your way through a few basic tutorials. At least you can teleport, right? Try not to overthink the plot here, because the writers certainly didn't. Your job is to sneak into a highly secured building filled with armed guards and lethal traps, and you don't use guns but you're expected to get out alive. This nonstop action heist caper is lots of fun, so long as you're not bothered by repetitive action and challenging gameplay. ![]()
